NHRIs invited to take part in discussion on right to a healthy environment

NHRIs are invited to take part in an informal discussion with a group of human rights and climate change experts.

National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) are invited to take part in an informal discussion with a group of human rights and climate change experts on efforts to seek the reaffirmation of the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment by the UN General Assembly.

In October 2021, the United Nations Human Rights Council voted to recognise the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a universal human right. It is now hoped that the UN General Assembly will reaffirm this right through the adoption of a dedicated resolution.

The virtual discussion will be facilitated by Sébastien Duyck, Human Rights and Climate Campaign Manager at the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) in Geneva, with further discussions planned for later this year.

NHRI representatives who would like to lend their support to the movement and take part in the conversation, can register here:

Additionally, for NHRIs planning to submit parallel reports in the context of States reviews by Human Rights Treaty Bodies (HRTBs), this recently published synthesis note outlines the HRTBs statements and recommendations on climate-related matters.
