APF virtual dialogue brought together APF members from across the Asia Pacific to discuss the role of NHRIs relating to the human rights and climate change.

The human rights impacts of climate change, and the role of National Human Rights Institutions in addressing these, was the focus of a recent APF Virtual Dialogue, held at the request of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC).

The virtual dialogue provided a platform for APF members and prospective members to share their experiences and challenges in protecting and promoting human rights in relation to climate change.

It was the fifth event in the APF Virtual Dialogue Series, which brings together NHRIs from across the Asia Pacific to share how they work to promote and protect human rights in the era of COVID-19 and to discuss opportunities for collaboration.

APF members and prospective members delivered presentations on range of topics relating to climate change and human rights, including speakers from the NHRIs of Myanmar, Philippines, Maldives and India. Following the presentations, an open dialogue was held between participants, to enable the exchange of information and best practices.

The event was facilitated by Pip Dargan, APF Principal Adviser, Capacity Development and International Engagement and included presentations by Hla Myint, Chair of the Myanmar NHRC and Romulo Nayacalevu, lead facilitator on the APF’s inter-governmental mechanism (IGM) project, funded by the European Union, which aims to support NHRIs in South-East Asia and the Pacific to engage with their respective IGMs on human rights issues.
