We do this by providing comprehensive legal and policy guidance to governments and parliaments, supporting the creation of NHRIs that are strong, independent and compliant with the international standards outlined in the Paris Principles.
Our support extends beyond advisory roles; we provide technical expertise on critical operational aspects, including organisational structures, operational procedures, and resource management, to ensure that these institutions function efficiently and effectively.
In our collaborative efforts, we actively engage with government officials, parliamentarians, and civil society organisations to draft and advocate for legislation that paves the way for the establishment of NHRIs.
Recently, we have worked closely with representatives from Cambodia, the Cook Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), and the Solomon Islands, assisting in the development of draft legislation and proposals aimed at establishing NHRIs in these countries.
One of the great strengths of NHRIs is that they are in a unique position to voice the hopes and concerns of communities in the countries they represent."
Maryam Al-Attiyah, Chairperson, Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions
NHRIs work to uphold human rights at the national level, ensuring the implementation of international standards within their countries. The United Nations recognises independent, effective NHRIs as key to advancing Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to foster peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.
In the Asia Pacific region, home to nearly two-thirds of the world’s population, the absence of a comprehensive intergovernmental system for human rights makes the role of NHRIs even more crucial.
